“Calm seas never make skillful sailors”

Looking back on my 51 years of earthly existence, It is amazing how “good” I have had it.

The biggest bump in my childhood was when my parents divorced. School required zero effort to get through. I was too young to go to Vietnam and the U.S. was the world leader in most everything. Politics were reasonably civil except for that nasty JFK incident. Prosperity and smooth sailing, for the most part was all I knew.

There were no major wars, plagues, economic disasters that could be classified as globally harrowing. Good times...

Was this a blessing?

Sure it was!

uh, well, wait I... let me get back to you on that.

Why do I have this nagging feeling that storms are brewing?

Merl Haggard sang a song:

“Are the good time really over for good?”

I wish a buck was still silver.

It was back when the country was strong.

Back before Elvis; before the Vietnam war came along.

Before The Beatles and "Yesterday",

When a man could still work, and still would.

Is the best of the free life behind us now?

Are the good times really over for good?

Are we rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell?

With no kind of chance for the Flag or the Liberty bell.

Wish a Ford and a Chevy,

Could still last ten years, like they should.

Is the best of the free life behind us now?

Are the good times really over for good?

I wish coke was still cola,

And a joint was a bad place to be.

And it was back before Nixon lied to us all on TV.

Before microwave ovens,

When a girl could still cook and still would.

Stop rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell.

Stand up for the Flag and let's all ring the Liberty bell.

Let's make a Ford and a Chevy,

Still last ten years, like they should.

The best of the free life is still yet to come,

The good times ain't over for good.

It was a good message back when Merl first recorded it but. It seems even more poignant now.

In the last Presidential election the people spoke up and asked for change. We are getting some change all-right, the winds of change are really starting to howl in fact.

I’m reasonably sure that a small craft advisory has been issued and we are in for a bit of a blow.

It could get ugly.

A guy, if he let himself, could get nervous thinking about navigating in heavy seas especially if he acknowledges the relative calm that he has grown accustom.

Flying seems like a much better option.
